Alden Ruml

Morning Soldier

Proud and tall
White
scoffing at the blue-collared working class

he silently derides
calling to the prodigal
who stand by his side
and extol his every trait

despondent
insipid
called to duty

pumped up, whipped
into a profusion of immutable strength

rich and bold
never-swaying
complimentary and sweet
through only on the surface

ephemeral glory
of proud color
ostentatious

Marked with distinction
popular belief

ushered from his home of austerity
into the cold
consumed
gone

“Double-tall
Grande
Americano”
