Where I Come From

I am from a divorced family,
Yet both parents are re – married and happy;
I am from always having food on the table,
Yet constantly being reminded of those who are starving to death;
I am from living in a safe community,
Yet near to a violent one;
I am from getting presents at every holiday without fail,
Yet knowing that some children will spend Christmas alone;
I am from never running out of money,
Yet seeing people begging on the street to support families larger than mine;
I am from always having a place to live,
Yet knowing that countless families will sleep on the street tonight;
I am from the descendants of immigrants,
Yet I am aware that many people have not been able to come and start anew;
I am from having loving friends,
Yet seeing lonely people without any friends at all;
I am from being healthy,
Yet knowing that people die of disease every minute;
I am from love and luck,
And I know that I must never take it for granted.
