Terrence Cullen II

Where Is My Umbrella?

It’s raining and dull
And I need it because I want to go
On a walk in the park

There I can see the old man who
Walks slow and lingers
He takes two steps and then says
“It is time to turn back”

His initials are C.V.F.
At least
I think they are
Because that’s what it says on his bag

I don’t know much about him
Only that
His face is like an old-time film
Bones barely covered by
The fragile features of his face
But his hands are relaxed and
At ease

Sometimes the accordion man is there playing
Waltzes from long ago
Beneath the elm tree
C.V.F. stands and blankly stares
I cannot tell if he enjoys it
Or not

Whenever I see him I want to ask
"Come and take me somewhere
When time was fast"

I always wonder why
He doesn’t smile
One day I will be old, too

It’s in the dresser
Wrapped up in a case
